Verbal behavior is an approach to increase a child’s functional communication using the principles of applied behavior analysis. Language, like all other behaviors, is conditioned by the consequences of previous use of language.
Verbal Behavior in particular focuses on the different functions of language which include requesting (manding), labeling (tacting), answering questions (intraverbals), and echoing, with regard to the roles of a listener and a speaker. Unknown will be taught to use language in each of these areas using reinforcing consequences. By focusing on building functional communication this approach can also decrease maladaptive behaviors.
